After a strong run at Michigan International Speedway was cut short last year, Brandon Brown looks to improve on what he started last year. The Woodbridge, VA native had moved forward towards the lead pack to start Stage 2 last year. Brown appeared to be in position to score Stage points and a strong finish in the 2021 running of the New Holland 250. However, a multi-car accident ended the race early for the driver of the No. 68 Brandonbilt Foundations Chevrolet Camaro SS. “Last year we ran really well, were happy with the car and having the balance right,” explained Brown. “That came to an abrupt end when there was contact. We want a better finish and just want an overall better weekend. We need to work on our qualifying efforts and start near the front. Hopefully that’ll keep us out of trouble if we get right up front all day and try and maximize on stage points and get a solid finish out of it.” In total, Brown has three starts at the 2.0-mile Brooklyn, MI track. His best finish at the track to date, 26th, came in the 2019 race. The NASCAR Xfinity Series did not visit Michigan International Speedway in 2020. Historically, Brown and his family-owned Brandonbilt Motorsports team have gone off strategy, saving a set of tires for a late-race caution. The off-strategy calls will become more important as the gap to the cutoff for the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs nears 100-points. The 28-year-old enters Michigan 15th in the points standings. Brown is 401-points behind leader A.J. Allmendinger. He is currently 83-points behind the cutoff for the Xfinity Series playoffs, currently held by Ryan Sieg. With six races remaining until the start of the playoffs, the gap to the playoff cutline is not insurmountable. However, a victory would erase the need for Brown to point his way into the playoffs. “We have to go off strategy at this point because we need to make huge strides at the points to get into the playoffs if we want to point our way in,” admitted Brown. “If we have any chance of doing it, we’re going to have to make some big digs at the points.” The NASCAR Xfinity Series New Holland 250 at Michigan International Speedway is scheduled for Saturday, August 6 at 3:30 pm ET following completion of NASCAR Cup Series qualifying. The race can be viewed on USA Network and listened to via the Motor Racing Network as well as SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90. Practice for the New Holland 250 starts at 9:00 am ET with qualifying at 9:30 am ET. Coverage of both practice and qualifying is available on the NBC Sports app and website. Coming off of a strong run last weekend, Brandon Brown hopes to continue the momentum into the Explore The Pocono Mountains 225 at Pocono Raceway . At New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS), Brown scored his first top-15 finish at the track with a third-place finish. At Pocono, the Brandonbilt Motorsports driver has three starts with two top-15 finishes. Brown looks to improve upon his best finish at ‘The Tricky Triangle,’ 13th in 2019. “We’re going to Pocono with a little bit of a stronger motor this year,” admitted Brown. “That is going to help with those long straightaways, but I also have to figure out who to work with there. It’s almost like a superspeedway where if you can find a good drafting partner, two cars would be faster than one. “It will be key to make sure that you’re making smart decisions with everybody, pushing down the straightaways instead of trying to run side-by-side and drag each other back and letting the lead pack get away. It’s a tough place, but it’s one where as long as we keep the nose clean and keep the equipment under us then I think we have a real shot at doing great. The most important corner is the last one, Turn 3, because you’re setting up for the very long frontstretch.” The driver of the No. 68 Brandonbilt Foundations Chevrolet Camaro SS plans to repeat the success from NHMS at Pocono. The Woodbridge, VA native saved a set of tires until the end. The strategy helped Brown maximize points with the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs inching closer. “We’re going to try and focus on having another strong run because having strong runs like the one at New Hampshire gets us closer to the playoffs in the points,” explained Brown. “That’s the ideal goal is to get into the playoffs. How we execute strategy is what’s going to count, and this past weekend was good execution. “We ran strong in the first 2 Stages and were able to use some strategy to have fresh tires at the end. We’ll make sure that we keep executing what we know we can do and make sure that we take the cars up to the best position that they’re capable of running.” Brown cut the gap to the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoff cutline from 100-points down to just 61. Fellow Chevy Racing driver Landon Cassill currently holds the final spot in the Xfinity Series playoffs with eight races remaining in the regular season. The Explore The Pocono Mountains 225 at Pocono is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 23, on USA Network, SiriusXM NASCAR, and PRN. The race is scheduled to start following the completion of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. Featured Photo Credit: Photo by NKP / NKP Photo. At New Hampshire Motor Speedway Brandon Brown looks to maximize momentum and speed in the Crayon 200. Brown has two starts at the 1.058-mile track with a best finish of 16th. Though both times he’s competed at ‘The Magic Mile,’ the conditions have been different. In 2019 the track was treated with the PJ1 traction compound. The NASCAR Xfinity Series officials left the track untreated in last year’s race. “New Hampshire hasn’t been our strongest race,” admitted Brown. “We’ve been working on a lot of things throughout the week to try and change that. We’re going there with a different setup package and hopefully that picks up our speed. “Everything is contingent on how NASCAR treats the track in terms of setup and preparing for that track. Are they putting down resin, PJ1, or leaving it alone? In terms of racing, it’s all about preparing yourself to be patient and take what the car will give you, maximizing the mistakes of others because the track is so flat. It’s crucial to keep the momentum up and keep your speed up.” The Loudon, NH track is one of the most variable tracks on the schedule. The driver of the No. 68 Zero FG Energy Drink Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 can adjust the balance of his car by running along a different seam in the corner. A few feet left or right can change the speed of the car for the Woodbridge, VA native. “It really depends on what you show up with because each lane between the seams has its own little characteristic to where you can find balance in a car, but just by straddling different seams or running a different line,” explained Brown. “It becomes a lot more of a variable on the track to find speed and maybe adjust your driving line to help your car out a little more.” Brown enters New Hampshire 15th in the championship points standings. The 28-year-old is 100-points behind the playoff cutline, currently held by fellow Chevy Racing driver Landon Cassill. The Crayon 200 is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 16 on USA Network, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, and the Performance Racing Network. Featured Photo Credit: Photo by NKP / NKP Photo. ELKHART LAKE, Wis. — Brandon Brown wanted a way to change the narrative behind the "Let's go, Brandon" message after his first career NASCAR victory inadvertently fostered a chant that has been used to insult President Joe Biden. Brown found that new message thanks to the family of an 8-year-old child with autism. Brandon Brundidge of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, was on a spring-break trip to Houston in March and saw signs with the "Let's go, Brandon" slogan. Brundidge believed the signs were meant to encourage him. He consequently started trying activities he'd never attempted before, such as learning to swim and removing the training wheels from his bicycle. His mother, Sheletta Brundidge, used that story to write a children's book titled, "Brandon Spots His Sign." Brown had the cover of Brundidge's book on the hood of his Camaro for his Xfinity Series race Saturday at Road America. "To have this come through was like that breakthrough moment for us," Brown said. "This can be positive. This can be good. It doesn't have to be hateful or divisive." This divisiveness had started after Brown earned his first career NASCAR victory last October. The crowd at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama chanted "F--- Joe Biden" during the winner's post-race interview. NBC Sports reporter Kelli Stavast incorrectly told Brown the fans were chanting, "Let's go, Brandon." From that point, "Let's go, Brandon," became a rallying cry for Biden critics, with signs bearing that message popping up all over. Brown unintentionally found himself in the middle of the firestorm that surrounded these chants. "I've just been hopeful that I could make it a positive, I could have my name back and not have it be so divisive and scary, where it wouldn't be a political statement for my friends and family to cheer me on during a race," Brown said. That's where the Brundidge family stepped in. Sheletta Brundidge is the mother of four children, and three of them have autism. She has written children's books focusing on each of them. She said that Brandon often dealt with social anxiety. That changed after she saw all the "Let's go, Brandon" signs and assumed people were cheering him on. He suddenly had a whole new attitude and wasn't nearly as shy about trying new things. "He literally wanted us to put flags in front of the house (saying), 'Let's Go Brandon," Sheletta Brundidge recalled. "I'm like, 'That's not going to happen. We're not putting these flags in front of the house." Brown learned about this book from his mother and invited the Brundidge family to Road America. They met in person for the first time this weekend, and the two Brandons became fast friends. "It feels like I have a twin brother but who's older than me," Brandon Brundidge said. The Brundidges were giving out copies of "Brandon Spots His Sign" at Road America. The book's cover design decorated Brown's car, though he was knocked out of Saturdays' race after getting caught up in a multi-car wreck that caused him to get examined and released from the infield care center. Finally, someone found a way for the "Let's go, Brandon" chant to unite rather than divide. "I'm sorry for what you went through all of this past year," Sheletta Brundidge told Brown on Saturday. "I know it's been horrible. But I'm so glad it happened because this child would not have this breakthrough (otherwise). He still would be afraid to ride his bike without training wheels. He's literally walking up to kids and passing out this book. He would have never done that (before)."
